cientists from UCL (University College London) and Tel-Aviv University and published today in PLoS One, sheds light on how the TB bacterium has evolved over the millennia and increases our understanding of how it may change in the future.

The bones, thought to be of a mother and baby, were excavated from Alit-Yam, a 9000 year-old Pre-Pottery Neolithic village, which has been submerged off the coast of Haifa, Israel for thousands of years. Professor Israel Hershkovitz, from Tel-Aviv University's Department of Anatomy, noticed the characteristic bone lesions that are signs of TB in skeletons from the settlement, one of the earliest with evidence of domesticated cattle.

An international collaborative team, led by Dr Helen Donoghue and Dr Mark Spigelman, UCL Centre for Infectious Diseases & International Health, conducted detailed analyses of the bones using scientific techniques that revealed DNA and cell wall lipids from Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the principal agent of human TB. The DNA was sufficiently well-preserved for molecular typing to be carried out and the analysis of the bacterial cell wall lipids by high performance liquid chromatography provided direct, confirmatory evidence of tuberculosis.We were also able to show that the DNA of the strain of TB in these skeletons had lost a particular piece of DNA which is characteristic of a common family of strains present in the world today. The fact that this deletion had occurred 9000 years ago gives us a much better idea of the rate of change of the bacterium over time, and indicates an extremely long association with humans."

The glacier, Goodge said, likely carried the eroded material from central East Antarctica toward the margin of the continent.

The scientists found the rock in a moraine that backed up to the Transantarctic Mountains. Other interesting, and as yet “undiscovered,” rocks are buried several kilometers below the ice.

“There are not many places that we can go to see what the old continental interior looked like,” Goodge said, though he added, “We can see some ancient rocks exposed in the Miller Range and the Geologists Range. … So we have some idea of what the old basement geology [looks like].

“The further back in geologic time you go, the more fragmentary everything becomes, so the evidence is very sketchy,” Goodge said. “One of the reasons I care about [projects like these] is that I like to tell geologic stories.”

But the reconstruction of Rodinia is more than an interesting intellectual exercise. The formation and eventual break up of the supercontinent occurred during a period of significant geological and biological evolution, according to Goodge.

“It was taking place at exactly the same time when there were huge changes in ocean seawater chemistry,” he said. “It’s when macroscopic life really starts to take off.” The first multicellular organisms, such as jellyfish and sponges, begin appearing on the biological stage.

Studying supercontinents is also important for determining where oil, gas, coal and metal deposits might be found, as well as determining major events in the earth’s history, according to Wagner.

human eye were popped into a camera, researchers have created a lens-shaped detector and placed it into a digital camera. The result, they say, could give the cameras a wider field of view and the capacity to produce crisper images.

The "electronic eye camera" relies on silicon detectors and electronics that can be shaped to a curved surface. Like the human eye, the curved light detectors act like our retina's rods and cones, which detect the incoming light and transfer it via the optic nerve to the brain where an image is formed.

"The retina is sort of on the back surface of your eyeball," said researcher John Rogers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "So in our cameras, we have a similar kind of eyeball that's made out of glass and our [silicon photo] detector sits on the surface of that hemispherical cavity in the same way that your rods and cones sit on the back surface of your eyeball."

Rogers expects the technology could show up in digital cameras within five to seven years.

The camera is just 256 pixels, but Rogers said the same approach should be feasible for systems with a lot more pixels. Currently, digital cameras can boast tens of Megapixels. Pixels represent the number of photo-detectors in digital cameras and can be thought of as a measure of the resolution of the pictures taken.

In a normal camera, the silicon photodectors are fitted to a flat silicon wafer, making it so the camera's lenses must reflect an image several times before it can reflect on the right spots on the flat focal plane. The resulting images are less sharp than what we see with our eyes.

Scientists have been stumped over how to place those electronics on a curved surface to yield working cameras, despite many different attempts over the last 20 years.

Rogers, Yonggang Huang of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and their colleagues made a thin, elastic membrane and stretched it out flat. They transferred the flat electronics onto the membrane and popped the membrane back into its curved shape.

Usually, this "popping back" leads to breaking of the brittle semiconductor materials.

So Rogers and Huang created a series of photodetectors and circuit elements that are so small they aren't affected when the membrane snaps back to a curved form. (Think of them like buildings on the Earth — though flat buildings are built on the curved Earth, the area they take up is so small that the curve isn't felt.)

They also connected each of the 256 silicon detectors (pixels) with thin plastic wires. (In normal cameras, metal is used as a connector.) The so-called pop-up bridges take the strain associated with the return of the membrane to its curved shape.

"So they can kind of move relative to one another," Rogers told LiveScience. "And those little plastic ribbon cables can deform in a way that doesn't lead to fracture."

The team incorporated the curved system into a working eye-like camera. The resulting images were much clearer than those obtained with similar, but flat, digital cameras.

Earth occur only in the sci-fi realm, but now scientists have laid out a way to pinpoint our planet’s center of mass, providing a more accurate map of that core destination.

The results will lead to critical information for studying earthquakes, volcanoes, global sea-level rise and warming, and a post-glacial rise in some surface areas related to the melting of ice sheets.

Until now, scientists have defined Earth’s center of mass in two ways—either as the mass center of Earth as a single object or as the mass-center of Earth’s system, including ice sheets, oceans and our atmosphere in the equation.

Jell-O planet

It's tricky finding the center of a giant, squishy object, scientists say.

"By its very nature, Earth's reference frame is moderately uncertain no matter how it is defined," said Donald Argus of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. “The problem is very much akin to measuring the center of mass of a glob of Jell-O, because Earth is constantly changing shape due to tectonic and climatic forces."

If Earth were a completely solid, perfectly round object, finding its center of mass would be sweet and simple. However, as first proposed by Isaac Newton, our planet is not perfectly round.

Now scientists know Earth is somewhat of a “buckled” sphere in which the midsection bulges outward. And because mass is distributed unevenly across its surface (more mass means more gravitational tug), the point around which the planet is balanced is offset from the actual center of Earth.

Plus, mass doesn’t stay put, but instead changes over time as glaciers melt, tectonic plates move and volcanoes empty out to lay massive lava on Earth’s surface. These changes in mass atop and beneath Earth’s surface cause the center of mass to shift slightly over time.

Accurate measure

Argus developed the new center-finding technique to find the mass center of Earth as a single object, which can estimate Earth’s center of mass to within 0.04 inches a year. The center of mass is calculated as a relative measurement, and so the measurement is given as a velocity.

Past estimates calculated the center of the whole Earth system, resulting in the 2000 and 2005 estimates differing by about 0.07 inches a year.

Argus believes the mass center of solid Earth is a more accurate reference frame, because it doesn’t change from year to year.

The new technique, described in the June issue of the Geophysical Journal International, relies on data collected from a string of instruments. These include a network of global positioning system (GPS) receivers, a network of satellites called Laser Geodynamics Satellites (LAGEOS), radio telescopes and satellite-tracking instruments.

The Earth-only reference frame will improve estimates of sea-level rise made by satellite altimeters, which rely on measurements of the location and motion of the center of mass of Earth’s system. Sea-level rise is a gauge of global warming, and so the results will boost scientists’ understanding of the increase in our planet’s average temperature. The rising seas are thought to be the result of melting ice sheets in areas such as Greenland and Antarctica.

“If you changed the velocity of the Earth’s center a millimeter (0.04 inches) per year, you would change the estimate of sea level by less than one millimeter,” Argus told LiveScience, “but even half a millimeter would be important.”

On the rebound

In addition, how Earth will respond physically to past and future glacial melting has been shrouded in uncertainty. When frozen, the mammoth weight of miles-high sheets of ice causes tiny deformations of Earth’s crust. And when this ice melts, the land rebounds a bit. Earth is still on the rebound from the close of the last ice age.

“For scientists studying post-glacial rebound, this new reference frame helps them better understand how viscous Earth's solid mantle is,” Argus said, “which affects how fast Earth's crust rises in response to the retreat of the massive ice sheets that covered areas such as Canada 20,000 years ago.”

The walls were usually made with mud and stones. Since cement was not available, they were using hair of goats and eggs mixed with the mud to improve its strength. The north side was thicker and with the least openings. The entrance was usually in the south side.

On the north side of the house they usually planted some evergreen trees like olive trees that would block the cold north wind blowing directly on the house. On the south side of the house they used some deciduous trees. This way in the summer time they had useful shade, and in the winter there were no leaves to block the wanted sun to warm the house.

But they didn't stop here! They used over the south doors and windows, an extension cover it with a carefully designed size. The size of this extension was arranged in a way so that in the summer the sun couldn't fall directly into the house. In the winter that the sun has a lower orbit, therefore this extension would not be a problem and the house was heated by the sun!

Another clever solution was the use of pergola with specially arranged length and height. This way they could achieve almost the same results, plus they had a lot of tasty grapes to enjoy! :-)

Over this stone there is a big triangle empty of material to prevent it from collapsing from the extra weight! The knowledge required for such design and building is not common even today. North East to New Guinea there is an island named Apraphul. There have been found many pieces from an applicator with ropes and pulleys that didn't seem to help anything obvious. After a more careful analysis it proved to be part of the more ancient digital calculator known until that time. The construction dates close to 850 A.C.

The people of the Apraphul were capable sailors and had built very well made ships. It seems that for a strange reason they were using binary counting system, same with what modern computers are using. In the construction that was found there were been used boxes with holes from where some ropes were passing through; according to their length were representing 0 or 1. As many of you probably know with only three boxes (representing digits) they could represent the first eight digits of our decade system.

Using ten boxes they could represent 1024 numbers.
Continuing this the next logical step is boxes that were operating as gates of special purposes, like the modern AND, OR, and inverters. Anyone familiar with basic digital electronics should be knows them. Multiplexers and flip flop were used as memory devises combining simpler types of gates.

There were found in an area some rows of 8 boxes of flip-flop type gates. This was their 8-bit memory! Next to these flip-flop gate boxes other boxes type AND and OR gates found in register operation! It is believed that this computer could be programmed, with bits and bytes of course.
To have always good accuracy the ropes were kept tight with special mechanisms. As you understand there were too many ropes to move whenever a calculation was required and the human power was not enough, so there were using elephants! A lot of elephant bones in the same area prove this!

Who made this digital calculator and what was calculated remains a mystery, especially for this area of the planet that didn't gave us similar surprises, at least not in the history that I know so far!

The Ice Hotel, first constructed in the late 1980’s, is built and re-built each winter in Jukkasjarvi, located about 120 miles north of the Artic Circle. No, this is not an urban legend. A real hotel, built completely out of ice drawn from a nearby river, is built every winter and available for guest stays. The incredible structure is, as you might guess, one of the best places for an intriguing hotel stay in Sweden, and perhaps the world.

The Ice Hotel Sweden is built from blocks of ice gathered from the Torne River, as well as bulldozers, chainsaws jackhammers. Each year, the ice hotel has a different design, usually spreading over a space of about 53,700 feet. The Ice Hotel Sweden uses more than 4,000 tons of ice to create the igloo-like structure, and usually features roughly 60 guest rooms. The Ice Hotel Sweden also features a number of other kinds of rooms, including a sauna, a reception hall, a multimedia theatre and an ice chapel for weddings, baptisms and other ceremonies.

The Sweden Ice Hotel is open for business beginning in December (depending on the weather) and ending in March. Not only is the entire Sweden Ice Hotel structure made totally of ice, but all of the furniture and most of the décor found within is also made from ice. Beds at the Sweden Ice Hotel are slabs of solid ice, and chairs are carved from blocks of ice. Statues and other forms of art are carved throughout the hotel, in rooms and in hallways, and tend to be quite ornate. For comfort, reindeer skin blankets are draped over beds and chairs to offer (moderate) warmth.

Since the temperatures are of course well below freezing, guests of the ice hotel in Sweden will be given a collection of gear meant to offer some protection for the duration of their stay. Full jumpsuits made of beaver nylon are issued to guests of the ice hotel in Sweden, as are insulated body bags first developed for astronauts wlking o the moon.

Prior to the public opening in March, Grand Canyon Hualapai West will host a “First Walk” event for media and VIPs. The name of the first public figure to step on The Skywalk will be announced closer to the opening.

The historical rollout of The Skywalk structure, with the glass in place, is scheduled for February 27 to March 2. The initial part of the rollout process involves jacking the structure up off of the supports and then subjecting the structure to several days of thorough tests that replicate the conditions of final placement. After the final testing is complete, the multi-million pound steel enforced structure will be rolled out across the canyon’s edge, which takes multiple days. Immediately after the structure is in position, it will be seated and attached to the foundation. Details for a media event during the rollout will be revealed closer to the event.

His time of 4min 03.84sec was 1.41sec inside the figures he established at the US trials last month. His challengers lived with him for nearly three quarters of the race then faded on the final freestyle where his narrow lead of one second over team mate Ryan Lochte stretched and stretched until it finally snapped and away he went to finish 2.32 ahead.

Lochte praised Phelps’ performance saying: “He had a great race all the way and I’m proud of him.”

Phelps, normally laid back and cool, could not hid his delight with his time and had a broad grin on his face as he looked at the scoreboard at the end of his race. On the rostrum there was a hint of emotion but the grin was soon back when his country's national anthem was suddenly cut short.

Phelps claims, “I told Bob (Bowman his coach) that this would be my last 400m medley, so I’ve got to go out there and get a good time. And this was a good time.”

His aim was a 4min 3sec swim but he didn’t feel good claiming that in the call room he “got like these cold chills.” But did admit, “I’m emotional, excited. It’s a really good way to start.” One down, seven to go.

A second world record came in the women’s 400m medley where the first two were inside the previous mark. Stephanie Rice the former world record holder from Australia, and Kirsty Coventry the reigning Olympic 200m backstroke champion were chasing the top spot.

Rice led at the end of the butterfly, Coventry at the half way stage. But from then on it was Rice although the gap was never more than a quarter of a second. She made her move on the first length of the freestyle and was almost a second up at the final turn. Coventry came back hard just failing to catch her rival. Rice’s time of 4min 29.45 was 0.44sec ahead and 1.67sec inside the previous world best held by Katie Hoff of the US who had to settle for bronze.

Hannah Miley finished in sixth spot but the experience the nineteen year old gained should be invaluable for the future.

History was made when Taehwan Park the world champion gave South Korea her first Olympic swimming gold medal when winning the 400m freestyle in 3min 41.86sec.

The eighteen year old produced a personal best of 3min 41.86 sec 0.58 ahead of a fast finishing Lin Zhang who won China’s first swimming medal of the games.

The British girls quartet ended the first session of finals with a British record of 3min 38:18sec slicing one second of the figures they established last night. Fran Halsall got the team off to a good start with a British mark dipping under the 54sec for the first time. Her split of 53:81. shaved 0.46sec off the time she recorded in Rome six weeks ago. She was followed by Caithlin McClatchey (54:48), Jessica Sylvester (55:34) and Mel Marshall (54;45.). The gold went to the flying Dutch squad who set a games record of 3min 33;76sec.

Jemma Lowe was disappointed with he heat swim which gave her sixteenth and final place into the semi-finals of the 100m butterfly after which she said, “I’ve been 57 so I can do it.”

But this morning the nerves were gone and she did just that equalling her British record of 57.78 to move forward to the final .

Alexander Dale Olen of Norway established a games record of 59.16sec just 0.03 outside the world record, to qualify in pole position for the 100m breaststroke. Britain’s Chris Cook finished seventh in his heat with a time of 1min 00.81, placing him fifteenth.

Earthrace is a 78 foot alternative fuel powered wave-piercing trimaran; part of a project to break the world record for circumnavigating the globe in a powerboat—and to do so using only renewable fuels

The boat's engines are powered completely by a biodiesel fuel source. This fuel is derived mainly from animal fat, soybeans, or other forms of biodiesel fuel. The powerboat itself is a 78-foot dramatic-looking wave-piercing trimaran, designed by Craig Loomes Design Group Ltd, with two 540 hp Cummins Mercruiser diesel engines, fueled with 100% Biodiesel, and is made mostly of carbon composite. It cost $1.25 million, which was mostly funded by generous sponsors. When asked, "Regrets about the cost of it all?" Pete Bethune replied "No...You know, I do have the coolest boat in the world

Led by New Zealander Pete Bethune, Earthrace intended to showcase environmentally friendly technologies such as low-emission engines, non-toxic antifouling and efficient hull design. The boat pierces waves instead of riding on top of them, which both results in a smoother ride and allows the boat to run at high speeds, even in rough seas. The current record of 74 days, 20 hours, 58 minutes was set by British boat "Cable & Wireless" in 1998. Earthrace made its first voyage on February 24, 2006 and planned to begin the record attempt trip on March 1, 2007

the seven wonders of the world for people would have been really a tough one. There were so many marvels to choose from. The task of compiling the list of seven wonders of the world was originally started by around 5th century BC.

We all know the difficulties of old days to travel around places. People had quite tough times in travel and collecting data like these. Imaging traveling by walk or on camels or horses for 100s of miles without a proper place to rest. Of course our generation is blessed to have a large number of hotels and lodges wherever we go. We have aero places, trains, buses, cars, bikes and what not.

Pyramid of Giza
Egypt is a place any one would like to go for a vacation. Tourism is such a great money earner for Egypt. And when somebody travels, one of the most preferred place to visit would be the Cairo and the Giza city.
This is one of the largest pyramids in the world and considered to be one of the great among the seven wonders of the world. There are actually 3 Pyramids located in this place along with a Sphinx. The biggest of all is The Great Pyramid of Khufu and this is the only one among the seven wonders of the world. These architectural marvels are found in Giza City which is located at the northern edge of the Giza Plateau, about 10 miles west of present day Cairo.

If any body plans a vacation travel to Egypt, they must make sure to visit all the 3 Pyramids. A journey to Egypt would be incomplete without visiting them.

Great Pyramid of Khufu:
This pyramid was built by King Khufu around 2560 BC. Khufu is the second Pharaoh of the fourth dynasty of rulers in Egypt. He was also known as "Cheops". Among all the 3 pyramids listed above, the Great Pyramid of Khufu is the only one pyramid in the list of seven wonders of the world.

This pyramid is believed to have been built over 20 years. When it was built its height was around 146 m. But now it is only 137 m. This was one of the tallest structures in the world till 19th century. It was covered with casings of stones to smoothen its surface. It probably is considered to be one among the seven wonders of world because of its sheer size.

The apex of the pyramid is missing and looks like it was never installed. The casings of the pyramids were removed by the Arabs during 14th century. The sloping angle of the sides is 51 degrees and 51 minutes. Each side is oriented towards one of the cardinal points of the compass that is north, south, east and west. This deserves a place among one of the seven wonders of world for its precision.

On the north face, is the pyramid's entrance. The King Khufu's chamber is located at the heart of the pyramid. The king's coffin is made of red granite, as like the interior walls of his chamber. 5 boat pits surround Khufu's Pyramid on the south and the east. Two of these are believed to be used by the Pharaoh during his life time. One boat is made into a Boat Museum.
This is the only one existing wonder, among all the seven wonders of world.

Great pyramid of Khafre:
Khafre is the son of Khufu and is also known as Rakhaef or chefren and is the second largest Pyramid on the Giza site. He ruled from 2520 - 2494 BC. He built the Khafre pyramid, the sphinx, the mortuary temple and the valley temple. This pyramid is the only one on the top of which the casing still remains.

The burial chamber underground contains a red granite sarcophagus with its lid. Next to this, a square cavity which is believed to have held the canopy chest containing the Pharaoh's viscera.

This pyramid was built approximately during the period 2558 - 2532 BC. Its base is 702 ft square and the height originally was around 143.4 m and now is 136.1 m. This is not one among the seven wonders of world.

Great Pyramid of Menkaure:
Menkaure, also known as Mycerinus, ruled from 2490 - 2472 B.C. He built the smallest of the three pyramids at Giza, and is believed to be Khufu's grandson.

The height of this pyramid now is 62 m. To the south of this Menkaure pyramid, there are 3 small, minor and incomplete pyramids/tombs. One of them (the largest among the three), is supposedly built by Menkaure's principal wife. A coffin with bones of a young woman was found in the central tomb. This also is not part of the seven wonders of world.

Great Sphinx:
This Sphinx is attached to Khafre's complex, north of Khafre's valley temple and with a separate temple of its own. This is a figure with a lion's body and a man's face, which is supposed to be the guardian of the necropolis. This is believed to be a manifestation of sun god.

How to reach there:
The best way is to get to Cairo first. This could be through air or sea depending on the visitor's convenience. After that take a cab to Giza. In about 6-7 miles the
Sphinx and Great Giza Pyramids should become visible.

Pyramids in Egypt - Time Period:

The pyramids are monumental structure with stone or brick constructed with rectangular base or sometimes trapezoidal in shape. Their construction changed from time to time in Egypt, Sudan, Greece, Cyprus, Italy, India, Thailand, Mexico, and South America. But Egyptian are well known.

It was built for over a period of 2,700 Years. It started in the 3rd dynasty of Egypt and closed in the 6th dynasty. It was a royal tomb size in those times. It was a grave with a enclosure on high desert ground with an adjacent mortuary type temple and leading its way to the valley temple which is connected to the canal of the Nile. There were nearly eighty pyramids in Egypt and many of them were ruined and stolen off their riches long ago.

The prototype of the pyramid was the mastaba(Egyptian Word). It was designed with a flat-topped rectangular super structure of stone or brick with a shaft leading to the burial chamber. DOJSER, the 2nd King of the 3rd dynasty appointed IMHOTEP as an architect who constructed the mastaba purely out of the stone. It came to the height of 60 Meter and its based measuring 120m X 108m. It is called the Step pyramid and is one of the important one of Egypt. It was the first stone building. The greatest Pyramids are of Pharaohs Khufu, khafre and Menkaure at Giza. The Pharaohs are called as God-Kings.

The Great Pyramids of Giza was built over 5,000 years ago and Egyptians say that the area about which the pyramid is built is about 13 Acres and has a straggling total of 2,300,000 blocks of granite and limestone. There is no exact history about the transportation, construction and Quarrying of the pyramids.

The book of the dead, the ancient collection of mortuary texts, was found in the Egyptians tombs. It shows that it was re-edited in the 16th Century B.C. It includes the coffin texts from 2400 B.C. to 2000 B.C. Many of the book copies were found in the Egyptian tombs.

Sphinx, is a part of the great pyramids. It is a mythological creature with lions body with a human head and is an important image in the Egyptian and Greek art legend. Sphinx is derived from the Greek Grammarians word Sphingein that means to bind or to squeeze. It shows the Man crawling at childhood and walking with two legs in the grown age and starts to lean at old age. It is one of the monuments nearby the pyramids of the Egypt. The earliest and most famous one is at Giza. There are male sphinx and female sphinx and female one can be found some times with the male and it is identified with her paws raised. In later years, sphinx came out with wings and disappeared in the Egyptian history in 1,200 B.C and reappeared after 400 Years.

The great pyramid of Khufu, is the tomb building and was the true pyramid. Its size of the base reaches from 13 acres to !7 acres. The Khufu pyramid has some characteristic features in it such as a loft, and grand gallery, the kings chamber and the five compartments. The focal point of the pyramid has a funereally point of the king. The royal body of the king will be kept on valley temple built on the edge of the desert escarpment. The royal body of the king Unas of the 5th dynasty is still found fresh inside this pyramid. The dimensions of the pyramid are accurately made such that the atmosphere found inside the pyramid will not spoil skinned matter at any cost. The Kings also used to keep valuables such as Golden Pots and Jewels inside the pyramid to prevent it from theft but some of the pyramids miss the valuables in them and some of the pyramids possess them.

Temple of Artemis
This is located on the west coast of modern Turkey, south of Selcuk county about 50 km south of Smyrna. This place was called as Ephesus during ancient times. This temple was destroyed and rebuilt over several hundred years. From the descriptions of those times, this temple should have been a great place for travel and tourism. Tourists would have loved to visit such places.

This was first built during 800 BC near the river at Ephesus. The God Artemis in Ephesus is a goddess of fertility. This earliest temple supposedly contained a sacred stone, probably fallen from Jupiter. By 600 BC, a Greek architect named Chersiphron (and his son, Metagenes) was engaged and the temple was built. The temple was decorated with beautiful bronze statues sculpted by artists Pheidias, Polycleitus, Kresilas and Phradmon. This was destroyed by the Lydian king Croesus when he conquered Ephesus. He later built a large temple at the same place with the help of Theodorus.
This temple was both a market place and a place of worship. For years this place was visited by lots of merchants, tourists, artisans, kings to pay their homage and share their profits with the Artemis goddess. Lots of scholars venerated to the extent that this came to be recognized as one of the seven wonders of the world.
On July 21, 356 BC, a man named HeroStratus burned the temple. He did this in order to gain a big name in the history. For an inquisitive info, Alexander was also born the same night. The reconstruction was commenced very shortly with an architect called Scopas of Paros. He was the best architect of those times. When Alexander conquered Asia Minor, he offered to rebuild the temple. The reconstruction was in progress when he reached this place. Even then, it was restored only after his death. When he came into this place in 333 BC, the temple was still being rebuilt.
This Temple was the last of the Great Goddess Temples to remain open and was the site of Goddess worship well into the Christian era. When St. Paul visited Ephesus to preach Christianity, he was not at all accepted by the local Artemisians. But after the temple was destroyed by Goths in AD 262, most of the people had got themselves converted to Christianity. In AD 401 St. John Chrysostom torn the whole structure down. That was the end to this wonder of the world. This site got excavated only in 19th century.
This one of the seven wonders of world supposed to have contained 106 columns and each of them believed to be from 40 to 60 ft height. foundation was approximately 200 feet by 400 feet.

Colossus of Rhodes
If this wonder were remaining, this would have been one of the tallest artifacts in the world and also one the tallest among the seven wonders of the world. This wonder was erected to commemorate the victory of Rhodians against the Antagonids. This statue was located in the Harbor of the Mediterranean island Rhodes in Greece. The Island of Rhodes is located at the Southwestern tip of the Asia Minor, where the Aegean sea meets the Mediterranean.

If this was still available, this would have caught attention of the travelers more than any such taller statues.
This is a statue of the Sun god, Helios. On the Island of Rhodes 3 cities Ialysos, Kamiros and Lindos formed a unified city with their capital as Rhodes. During the period around 408 BC they had strong economic and commercial alliance with Ptolemy I Soter of Egypt.
In 357 B.C. this island was captured by Mausolus of Halicarnassus. It was then captured by Persians in 340 B.C. Then it fell into the hands of Alexander the Great in 332 B.C. After Alexander's death, 3 of his generals succeeded in dividing the kingdom for themselves. They are Ptolemy, Seleucus and Antigous. After this Rhodians supported Ptolemy which angered Antigous.
Antagonids in 305 BC, wanted to break their alliance and tried invading Rhodes and found this city to be impenetrable. Antagonids were fighting for almost one full year. By this time the support for Rhodes have started coming in from Egypt. So Antagonids started withdrawing their forces and fled, leaving behind lots of their arms and ammunitions, which lead to the construction of one of the seven wonders of world.
Rhodians sold some of those equipments and to celebrate their victory, erected a statue for their Sun God, Helios. Lot of the metals used in this construction came from the left off belongings of Antagonids. This is the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of world.
The construction took 12 years and the stature was erected in 282 BC. During the earthquake at about 226 BC, this Colossus of Rhodes (statue) was damaged and fell down. When they planned to rebuild it, the idea was dropped because some Oracle said the city will face misfortune if this statue is rebuilt. That was the final chapter to the story of this wonder of the world.

the 21st Century, the term "flat-earther" is used to describe someone who is spectacularly - and seemingly wilfully - ignorant. But there is a group of people who claim they believe the planet really is flat. Are they really out there or is it all an elaborate prank?

Nasa is celebrating its 50th birthday with much fanfare and pictures of past glories. But in half a century of extraordinary images of space, one stands out

On 24 December 1968, the crew of the Apollo 8 mission took a photo now known as Earthrise. To many, this beautiful blue sphere viewed from the moon's orbit is a perfect visual summary of why it is right to strive to go into space.

Not to everybody though. There are people who say they think this image is fake - part of a worldwide conspiracy by space agencies, governments and scientists.

Our attitude towards those who once upon a time believed in the flatness of the earth is apparent in a new Microsoft advert.

Satellite era

But are there any genuine flat-earthers left? Surely in our era of space exploration - where satellites take photos of our blue and clearly globular planet from space, and robots send back info about soil and water from Mars - no one can seriously still believe that the Earth is flat?

Wrong.

Flat earth theory is still around. On the internet and in small meeting rooms in Britain and the US, flat earth believers get together to challenge the "conspiracy" that the Earth is round.

"People are definitely prejudiced against flat-earthers," says John Davis, a flat earth theorist based in Tennessee, reacting to the new Microsoft commercial.

"Many use the term 'flat-earther' as a term of abuse, and with connotations that imply blind faith, ignorance or even anti-intellectualism."

Mr Davis, a 25-year-old computer scientist originally from Canada, first became interested in flat earth theory after "coming across some literature from the Flat Earth Society a few years ago".

"I came to realise how much we take at face value," he says. "We humans seem to be pleased with just accepting what we are told, no matter how much it goes against our senses."

Mr Davis now believes "the Earth is flat and horizontally infinite - it stretches horizontally forever".

"And it is at least 9,000 kilometres deep", he adds.

James McIntyre, a British-based moderator of a Flat Earth Society discussion website, has a slightly different take. "The Earth is, more or less, a disc," he states. "Obviously it isn't perfectly flat thanks to geological phenomena like hills and valleys. It is around 24,900 miles in diameter."

Mr McIntyre, who describes himself as having been "raised a globularist in the British state school system", says the reactions of his friends and family to his new beliefs vary from "sheer incredulity to the conviction that it's all just an elaborate joke".

So how many flat-earthers are around today? Neither Mr Davis nor Mr McIntyre can say.

Disappearing ships

Mr McIntyre estimates "there are thousands", but "without a platform for communication, a head-count is almost impossible", he says. Mr Davis says he is currently creating an "online information repository" to help to bring together local Flat Earth communities into a "global community".

"If you will forgive my use of the term 'global'", he say

And for the casual observer, it is hard to accept that all of this is not some bizarre 21st Century jape. After all, most schoolchildren know that ships can disappear over the horizon, that satellites orbit the earth and that if you head along the equator you will eventually come back on yourself.

What about all the photos from space that show, beyond a shadow of doubt, that the Earth is round? "The space agencies of the world are involved in an international conspiracy to dupe the public for vast profit," says Mr McIntyre.

John Davis also says "these photos are fake".

And what about the fact that no one has ever fallen off the edge of our supposedly disc-shaped world?

Mr McIntyre laughs. "This is perhaps one of the most commonly asked questions," he says. "A cursory examination of a flat earth map fairly well explains the reason - the North Pole is central, and Antarctica comprises the entire circumference of the Earth. Circumnavigation is a case of travelling in a very broad circle across the surface of the Earth."

Ultimate conspiracy

Mr Davis says that being a flat-earther doesn't have an impact on how one lives every day. "As a rule of thumb, we don't have any fears of aircraft or other modes of transportation," he says.

Christine Garwood, author of Flat Earth: The History of an Infamous Idea, is not surprised that flat-earthers simply write off the evidence that our planet is globular.

"Flat earth theory is one of the ultimate conspiracy theories," she says.

"Naturally, flat earth believers think that the moon landings were faked, as were the photographs of earth from space."

Perhaps one of the most surprising things in Garwood's book is her revelation that flat earth theory is a relatively modern phenomenon.

Ms Garwood says it is an "historic fallacy" that everyone from ancient times to the Dark Ages believed the earth to be flat, and were only disabused of this "mad idea" once Christopher Columbus successfully sailed to America without "falling off the edge of the world".

In fact, people have known since at least the 4th century BC that the earth is round, and the pseudo-scientific conviction that we actually live on a disc didn't emerge until Victorian times.

Theories about the earth being flat really came to the fore in 19th Century England. With the rise and rise of scientific rationalism, which seemed to undermine Biblical authority, some Christian thinkers decided to launch an attack on established science.

Samuel Birley Rowbotham (1816-1884) assumed the pseudonym of "Parallax" and founded a new school of "Zetetic astronomy". He toured England arguing that the Earth was a stationary disc and the Sun was only 400 miles away.

In the 1870s, Christian polemicist John Hampden wrote numerous works about the Earth being flat, and described Isaac Newton as "in liquor or insane".

And the spirit of these attacks lives on to the present day. The flat-earth myth remains the outlandish king in the realm of the conspiracy theorist.

And while we all respect a degree of scepticism towards the authorities, says Ms Garwood, the flat-earthers show things can go too far.

Ancient moss, insects found in Antarctica

WASHINGTON - Mosses once grew and insects crawled in what are now barren valleys in Antarctica, according to scientists who have recovered remains of life from that frozen continent. Fourteen million years ago the now lifeless valleys were tundra, similar to parts of Alaska, Canada and Siberia — cold but able to support life, researchers report.

Geoscientist Adam Lewis of North Dakota State University was studying the ice cover of the continent when he and co-workers came across the remains of moss on a valley floor.

"We knew we shouldn't expect to see something like that," Lewis said in a telephone interview.

The moss was essentially freeze dried, he said. Unlike fossils, where minerals replace soft materials, the moss tissues were still there, he said.

"The really cool thing is that all the details are still there," even though the plant has been dead for 14 million years. "These are actually the plant tissues themselves."

Lewis' findings are reported in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

While some mosses have been found near the coast of Antarctica, as well as insects living on sea birds, this site is well inland.

Further study uncovered remains of tiny crustaceans known as ostracodes, small midges and beetles, and pollen from southern beech trees and pink plants.

"The existence of wet-based glaciers, proglacial lakes, tundra vegetation and insect remains all indicate that the climate of the western Olympus range ... was warmer and wetter that that of today" about 14 million years ago, the researchers report.

It's important to know that because it adds to the understanding of the Earth's climate system, Lewis explained.

For 50 million years the Earth has been cooling, he said. "As it cools it crosses thresholds. This is one, when Antarctica became permanently frozen and locked up."

"You have to understand where these thresholds are," he added, "Because, if human beings are unfortunate enough to push climate over one of these thresholds, it could be a total catastrophe."

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation.

Although waffles seem to be a relatively contemporary food, they have been around, worldwide, for thousands of years. It is quite likely the Ancient Greeks ate extremely flat cakes, called obleios. However, it would appear the earliest evidence of the manufacture of waffle irons may have come up from Holland or Germany during the 1300s. Construction of these waffle irons consisted of two hinged plates which were connected to two long handles of wood. It was not unusual to find elaborate patterns, such as landscapes, religious symbols, or heraldic shields, imprinted upon the waffles by plates embossed with these symbols. Some plates had the honeycomb-grid that we now use. The waffle plates (or irons) were then baked over the fire in the hearth.

Waffles were cooked between two hot metal plates, a method used continuously throughout the Middle Ages by obloyeurs, people specializing in making a variety of obleios that were often flat or rolled into coronets (a horned shape).

In 1620, waffles made the voyage from Holland to North America, courtesy of migrating Dutch pilgrims. Thomas Jefferson obtained a waffle iron, after a journey to France, and voila! a new form of culinary entertainment cropped up, in the form of waffle frolics or parties, in the late 1700s. Party guests were given their choice of waffles topped with sweets such as maple syrup or molasses or with savories such as kidney stew.

Thomas Jefferson was dependent upon slaves for cooking; soon, many members of the African-American community were highly skilled in making waffles. The diet of the slaves relied upon whatever food items were left behind by landowners and plantation families. Poultry was a rare delicacy for the slaves. Waffles were considered equally exotic; they were unusual, expensive, and time-consuming. Because of these qualities, chicken and and waffles came to a special occasion meal for the African-American community; this hearty meal gave the slaves a supply of energy before attending all-day church services.

The first U.S. waffle iron was patented on August 24, 1869, by Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York. Predating electrical models, Swarthout's waffle iron was heated by sitting it atop wood or gas stoves. A swivel hinge, in a cast iron collar, joined the two iron plates together.

These new electrical waffle irons were standard kitchen appliances by the 1930s. Thomas J. Stackbeck was instrumental in the development of the first electric waffle iron. He was responsible for designing the prototype heating elements that were used in building a thermostat to prevent the problem of frequent overheating. With the assistance of funding from General Electric, the first fully electric waffle iron was presented to the nation on July 26, 1911.

Over the years since the first electric waffle iron made its appearance, the interior design has changed from the utilitarian to whimsical; for waffle purists, the square or circle waffle shape is always available and for the child in us all, waffle plates can range from hearts or shamrocks to Mickey Mouse® or Hello Kitty®.

Waffles have been consistently popular since that first electric waffle iron. In 1953, an entrepreneur named Frank Dorsa introduced the ever-popular Eggo "Leggo of My Eggo®' frozen waffles to supermarkets throughout the United States. Now waffles were available to everyone, even if no waffle iron was available.

The inventor of the Belgian waffle, Maurice Vermersch, was made famous by the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Before the outbreak of World War II, Vermesch experimented with his wife's recipe for waffles while living in Belgium.

He opened two restaurants in Belgium at the close of the war, and introduced his wife's waffles at the 1960 Brussels Fair. His first efforts were so successful that Vermersch and four other other Belgian families took the waffles to the 1964 World's Fair in Queens, New York. They changed the name of the waffles from Brussels Waffle to Belgian waffle once they set up business in New York.

Belgian waffles are thicker than American waffles because of its use of yeast. Because yeast is a living organism, it takes a certain amount of time to achieve sufficient growth. For various reasons, American cooks chose not to use yeast recipes and looked for newer and faster ways, to get somewhat similar results, but in less time; baking powder and baking soda seem to do the job.

Belgian waffles have a very light and fluffy texture. They are baked in slightly larger waffle irons than are American waffles. The best-tasting waffles are made with yeast. Unfortunately, waffles made with yeast can be stored for only one to two days. The taste is at its acme upon immediate removal from the waffle iron.

To avoid having to excavate pieces of stuck-on waffle from the grids, it is a good idea to grease older waffle irons with a bit of oil or melted butter before commencing baking. Nonstick-lined waffle irons to not need pretreating; the finished waffle should slide out with the greatest of ease

Like every important European capital, Torino is founded on a stratification of cultures, populations and civilizations. The city is dotted with evidence of its past that tells a story that began over two thousand years ago. The oldest documents mention a small village at the foot of the Alps called Taurasia, which was destroyed by Hannibal in 218 B.C. On these ruins, in 28 A.D, the Romans built Augusta Taurinorum: a colony with a grid pattern of streets, the ancient origins of today’s urban traffic layout with streets that are parallel and perpendicular to each other.

In 1280 the Savoys conquered the city (which in the intervening thousand years had become an important Municipality, a center of production and exchange) and in 1563 they transferred their capital from Chambéry to Torino. The city was beautified thanks to the efforts of great architects of the time: Ascanio Vitozzi, Carlo and Amedeo di Castellamonte, Guarino Guarini, Filippo Juvarra and Benedetto Alfieri.

The Ancient worldin the narrower sense I give it was a world centered on the Mediterranean Sea. While we'll spend nearly all our time on Italy and Greece, other cultures were also extremely important during this thousand years, and we'll take them into account as appropriate. Most, however, lay on the shores of the Mediterranean (Egpyt, Carthage, Phoenicia, and so on).

It was a pagan world, with a great many gods and goddesses. Every culture had its own, and while historians and anthropologists can point out striking similarities, these deities were very much specific to the people who worshipped them. The religious life of the ancient world was diverse and complex.

Politically it was a world dominated by city-states and empires rather than by kings or nation-states. That's an important distinction because we moderns know very little about city-states or empires, so we naturally try to understand them in terms of our nation-states. It will be important to understand the past in its own terms.

Commerce, and especially sea-borne commerce, unified the world economically. Industry was less important.

Socially it was defined by whether one was a slave or a citizen, and if a citizen, by what family one belonged to. Culturally, it was bounded by language: by Greek first, then by a combined dominance of Latin and Greek.

It was a "civilized" world in the pure sense of the word: the Latin word for city is "civis". People who lived in cities, or who were citizens even if they lived in the country, were ipso facto civilized. And anyone who lived outside the range of city-states were by that very fact uncivilized. This is another reason why I start the story of "Western Civilization" with Greece: because it was the first culture that was "civilized"; it was the first that was dominated by its cities.

At some point (we'll learn when), these characteristics changed fundamentally. The pagan religions gave way to Christianity. People began to speak of "Christendom" rather than "Hellas" or the imperium, and "Rome" meant a city rather than a whole world. While commerce continued to focus on the Mediterranean, it was no longer a unified sea (the Romans called it mare nostrum--"our sea") but was deeply divided between Christian lands and Islamic lands. While Latin was a common language, it was used only by a handful, and "barbaric" tongues predominated as the focus of the culture shifted away from the Mediterranean. Kings and counts and dukes came to supplant consuls and imperators.

Could part of the answer be that these ancients had a method of lifting and moving these massive stones - some weighing several tons - that made the task as easy and manageable as lifting a two-pound brick? The ancients, some researchers suggest, may have mastered the art of levitation, through sonics or some other obscure method, that allowed them to defy gravity and manipulate massive objects with ease.

The ruins of several ancient civilizations - from Stonehenge to the pyramids - show that they used massive stones to construct their monuments. A basic question is why? Why use stone pieces of such enormous size and weight when the same structures could have been constructed with more easily managed smaller blocks - much like we use bricks and cinderblocks today?

The ancient city disappeared from history long ago; however, the central [Chinese] government has listed the city as one of the country’s historic cities that should be protected by the government as a national treasure. The Kiroran City ruins should be protected by the government as one of the very ancient national treasures; however, they are being destroyed. Ming Hangao was appointed director of the Culture and Civilization Bureau of Charkilik county by the government. His job is to protect the city. He charges 10,000 yuan (RMB) per person as an entrance fee. The tourists can do whatever they want once they pay. Ming Hangao…believes he has found an investment opportunity. Gulchehra: The Kiroran City Ruins are one of the very ancient cities of the Uyghur people. With their rich, ancient, and colorful history, the ruins provide valuable and precious information and archeological facts about ancient Uyghur culture, history, and civilization. The ruins are also considered a precious “museum” that provides archeological facts and materials. Currently, the ancient city ruins have become a casualty of human destruction. They are being destroyed. They are not being destroyed by natural disasters, such as by cruel sandstorms, but by humans.

The Kiroran City Ruins are supposed to be protected by the government as one of the historic ancient cities in the country. There is a sign written on a stone that says, “Humans may not trespass, and the ruins should be protected and treasured as a precious ancient culture.”

The Earth's Carbon Cycle

The Earth maintains a natural carbon balance. When concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO₂) are upset, the system gradually returns to its natural state. This natural readjustment works slowly, compared to the rapid rate at which humans are moving carbon into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels. Natural carbon removal can't keep pace, so the concentration of CO₂ in the atmosphere increases.

Climate Warming Is a Global Problem

But the impacts and potential solutions will affect us locally and in many different ways. The challenge for each of us and for our policy makers is to pursue effective responses that are as fair as possible to all people and nations.

The greenhouse effect is a natural warming process. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) and certain other gases are always present in the atmosphere. These gases create a warming effect that has some similarity to the warming inside a greenhouse, hence the name “greenhouse effect.

Carbon continually exchanges within a closed system consisting of the atmosphere, oceans, biosphere, and landmass. There are short- and long-term cycles at work.

Short-Term Cycles:
Carbon is exchanged rapidly between plants and animals through respiration and photosynthesis, and through gas exchange between the oceans and the atmosphere.

Long-Term Cycle:
Over millions of years, carbon in the air is combined with water to form weak acids that very slowly dissolve rocks. This carbon is carried to the oceans where some forms coral reefs and shells. These sediments may be moved deep into the Earth by drifting continents and eventually released into the atmosphere by volcanoes.

Human Impact

Like all other animals, humans participate in the natural carbon cycle, but there are also important differences. By burning coal, oil, and natural gas, humans are adding carbon dioxide (CO₂) to the atmosphere much faster than the carbon in rocks is released through natural processes. And clearing and burning forests to create agricultural land converts organic carbon to carbon dioxide gas. The oceans and land plants are absorbing a portion, but not nearly all of the CO₂ added to the atmosphere by human activities.

10,000 Words was created in response to a training workshop I participated in with editors from some of the top newspapers in the U.S. At the end of the workshop, the question was asked "Where can we go for more multimedia tutorials?"

There are several sites that provide tutorials for multimedia tools, but not in a journalistic context, and several multimedia blogs, many of which lament the state of the industry, yet don't showcase the tools to make multimedia happen. And thus 10,000 Words was born.

Scientists have made amazing discoveries about the human body over the years, but because journalists and scientists speak two different languages, trying to explain those discoveries can be difficult. What better way to explain the complex processes of the body than through new media?

Specialized Bicycle Components has put together an amazing interactive Flash animation to demonstrate how bicycles, and more specifically the company's products, interact with the human body. The centerpiece of the project is a figure stripped down to blood, bone and sinew that mimics the different movements of a bicycle rider. Users can toggle between a number of bike moves, including the spin and the hammer, and simultaneously isolate several systems in the body, including the nervous and circulatory systems.
heart, has created the Hybrid Interactive Heart. Users can toggle between the opaque tissue of the organ and a "glass" version that shows the inner workings of the heart. The result is absolutely mind-blowing and somewhat hypnotic. A similar video animation shows the beating heart with blood flow.

the Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in China, built, rebuilt, and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire during the rule of successive dynasties.

Several walls, referred to as the Great Wall of China, were built since the 5th century BC, the most famous being the one built between 220 BC and 200 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. That wall was much further north than the current wall, built during the Ming Dynasty, and little of it remains.

The Great Wall is the world’s longest human-made structure, stretching over approximately 6,400 km (4,000 miles) from Shanhai Pass in the east to Lop Nur in the west (of China) , along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia (the northern province of China).

It is also the largest human-made structure ever built in terms of surface area and mass.

In some companies you can see that 80% of international sellers are girls and near 20% boys, Managers would like to have more girls employees than boys.

I asked the reason from 25 managers in China and they answered that, Girls know English much better than boys and they have more ability of selling! Also they believe the girl should be beautiful so come and start working!

What is the reason of this difference? What is your opinion?
